INTRODUCTION

This position is categorized as ?Open to Agency Only?; this position is only open to current UConn NP-2 employees.

UConn?s Facilities Operations Department has a job opening for a Maintenance Supervisor 1 ? Grounds position within the Public Works Shop. This is a permanent, full-time, 1st shift position, with a work schedule of Monday ? Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., 37.5 hours per week with an unpaid half an hour for lunch. The hourly rate of pay will be determined based on the employee?s current Step of the TC Pay Plan.

This position is categorized as Emergency Support Services/Essential Staff. Must be willing to work during emergency closures/delayed openings due to inclement weather or for significant events that affect campus operations. Applicants must also be willing to respond to emergencies on overtime (nights, weekends, holidays and weather/storm related events). Please note that Facilities Operations NP-2 employees may also be required to perform job duties as assigned at any of the Regional Campuses.

SELECTION PLAN

This position is categorized as ?Open to Agency Only?.  Current, qualified UConn NP-2 employees will be considered for this position. This position requires considerable knowledge of modern methods and equipment involved in grounds maintenance, a variety of trades, along with knowledge and experience with supervising employees assigned to snow and ice removal duties, and the materials and equipment used to perform snow and ice removal tasks.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

At UConn, the Maintenance Supervisor I ? Grounds position, within the Public Works Shop of the Facilities Operations Department, is responsible for supervising a crew of highly skilled trade workers and skilled workers. This position is responsible for coordinating the daily work assignments for Skilled Maintainer and General Trades Worker employees; scheduling and assigning work to staff through AiM, estimating labor and material for jobs including writing quotes; providing information to supervisors and managers on the progress of jobs in the shop; working with contractors and other trades employees; assisting employees with troubleshooting work and resolving issues; working with the higher level supervisor and manager to address disciplinary actions as required; monitoring the progress of job assignments through completion; assisting with the planning, preparation and coverage for large events such as Commencement, snow/weather, sports related, etc.; establishing good customer relations/communication; reviewing/approving timesheets in CORE-CT and completing overtime equalization rosters; completing administrative computer work and paperwork as required; working with the Facilities Operations Business Services Staff to coordinate Environmental Health & Safety and UConn training for employees. This position also provides additional supervisory support to the MS2 ? Utilities when needed for the crew consisting of STA-Utilities, QCW Utilities and QCW Masonry employees, and provides additional support, and may cover in the absence of the other MS1 ? Grounds when needed for the crew consisting of a Master Gardener and University Arborists. The MS1 ? Grounds positions work together to share the responsibility of supervising the Snow and Ice Team, Subcontractors and Student Labor employees.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS ? GENERAL EXPERIENCE

1. Five (5) years of experience in grounds maintenance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS ? SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

1. Three (3) years of General Experience must have been performing skilled tasks in grounds care.

NOTE : For state employees, this experience is interpreted at the level of a Skilled Maintainer.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS ? SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

1. Graduation from vocational or technical school may be substituted for one (1) year of the General Experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Ten years of experience in a variety of grounds care work and maintenance.
2. Demonstrated experience in all aspects of snow and ice removal job duties and requirements, including the operation of equipment and the supervision of snow and ice teams.
3. Strong leadership skills are an important qualification for this position.
4. Strong oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills.
5. Experience using computer software such as AiM, HuskyBuy, Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and/or Kuali Financial System (KFS) is desired.
6. Demonstrated experience in the use of computerized maintenance management software (CMMS).
7. Extensive knowledge of the management and removal of regulated materials including asbestos, mold, lead and PCBs, as well as knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, nationally recognized standards and guidelines, as related to occupational safety and health is desired.
8. Proficiency in the use of an iPad or similar technology.
9. Knowledge of the NP-2 contract and University policies and procedures.
10. Demonstrated experience in the supervision of employees in a variety of trades.
11. Participation in job searches as a member of the hiring team. 
12. Experience working with university purchasing systems such as Fastenal and HuskyBuy. 
13. Experience working with the University payroll system CORE-CT. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
• Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
• Applicants must have a current State of Connecticut CDL.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
• A physical examination may be required.

• Incumbents in this class will be required to drive and operate motor vehicles, including, but not limited to vans, box trucks, bucket trucks, pick-up trucks ranging in size from compact, midsize, full-size, and heavy-duty, some of which are equipped with lift gates, trailers, dump body etc., and a variety of trucks equipped with snow plows/sanders and equipment used for snow and ice removal ranging in size from skid steer, payloader etc.
• Incumbents must have adequate physical strength and agility to walk up and down stairs frequently and climb ladders independently. Must be able lift, carry and push material weighing up to 75 lbs. Must have the ability to utilize ladders, scaffolding, high-lifts and enter confined spaces. Must be able to inspect, troubleshoot and repair equipment. Incumbents must possess the ability to utilize tools, perform the required duties set forth above and will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary.
